Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Protests outside Ukrainian Parliament

The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv informs U.S. citizens that on July 13, 2017, a demonstration of more than 1,000 participants took place outside the building housing the Ukrainian parliament, or Rada. Some demonstrators reportedly clashed with police. Although clashes appeared to be over by around midday, flare-ups cannot be discounted.

The U.S. Embassy recommends that U.S. citizens review their personal security plans.  Even public gatherings intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should:

  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
  • Review your personal security plans and remain aware of your surroundings, including local events.
  • Monitor local news stations for updates.
  • Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.

The U.S. Embassy reminds U.S. citizens to cooperate and comply with instructions from local law enforcement. In addition, it is usually best to identify easy exit routes should a problem arise with short notice.
