Prepared Remarks of Colonel Tim Cleveland
Opening of Exercise Rapid Trident 2018
September 3, 2018
I would like to thank today’s distinguished guests for taking time from their busy schedules to attend the opening kickoff to Rapid Trident 18. Thank you. Also, I would like to say that we from the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment are honored to be assisting our fellow partner and allied nations for this year’s Rapid Trident 18.
There is no more important task for an army than to be the guardians of its border and culture. Combat Training Centers like this one here at Yavoriv challenge units around the world to become proficient in this critical task.
The Rapid Trident 18 exercise is a perennial illustration of this defense mission. The scenario will drive tough, realistic training against a near-peer, free-thinking opposing force.
During the exercise, units will have to overcome opposing forces, time, the elements and their own tendencies to be victorious. Also, in a world of constant conflict, nations are not alone, and Rapid Trident 18 affirms this fact with 13 additional partners and allies participating at all levels of the exercise from opposing forces to instructors and observers.
We stand on this field with each other. So, to the partners and allies, we too must always train to guard our world against threats to our common systems and values, and Rapid Trident 18 presents us with the opportunity to forge stronger relationships on a large scale.
To the soldiers, I want to say this: train hard, learn as much as you can, and, above all, be safe. The more sweat we lose on this training field, the less blood we will lose on the battlefield. I wish you all a tremendous training event. Thank you.
