Remarks by Chargé d’Affaires a.i. William Taylor at a Reception Commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence

December 10, 2019

Today is International Human Rights Day and we are very happy to welcome you here today.

It’s also the last day of 16 days of activism to prevent gender-based violence.

Everyone here has their white ribbon on, and this white ribbon is a commitment for all of us.

This white ribbon, I’m sure we’ll hear later on from Veronika [Mudra, founder of White Ribbon Ukraine] and others – like our young ambassador here – about the white ribbon movement, which began in 1991.  So the same age as Ukraine! (laughter)

And it’s a simple and important message – that gender-based violence is just wrong.

We can all agree – men and women, boys and girls – we can all agree, that this is just wrong and needs to be stamped out.

So I am very pleased to be able to welcome you here.

I’m honored to be able to welcome the First Lady of Ukraine here with us tonight, Olena Zelenska.

Thank you.
