Remarks by Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch at TPQ-36 Firefinder Radar Transfer Event

August 17, 2018

Thank you, ladies and gentleman, and everybody who is here today.  It is such a great pleasure to be here today to transfer two more of the Firefinder radar systems and radar support equipment to our partners in the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

This brings the total number of TPQ-36 Firefinder radar we have delivered to 11.

These radars bolster vigilance and provide reassurance against artillery bombardment, one of the leading causes of casualties in the Eastern front.

Russian-led forces will no longer be able to fire mortars and artillery with impunity hidden behind enemy lines.

The TPQ-36 radar also allows Ukrainian artillery formations to detect, locate, and defeat enemy indirect fire quickly and precisely, avoiding collateral damage.

A number of Firefinder radars are already deployed to the East, improving Ukraine’s detection and response capabilities.

These radar are just a small part of the over $1 billion, I would say small but very important part, of the over $1 billion dollars in security assistance the United States has provided to Ukraine since 2014.

We provide this assistance because we are committed to helping Ukraine defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

And we will continue working with our Ukrainian partners to help increase Ukraine’s military capacity.

Дуже дякую, слава Україні.

So it gives me great pleasure — it gives me great pleasure to turn over these transfer documents to General Muzhenko.
