Remarks by A/DCM Pennington at the State Border Guard Service New Face of the Border Selection Ceremony of Staff

Remarks by Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Pennington at the State Border Guard Service New Face of the Border Selection Ceremony of Staff
July 16, 2020

Deputy Prime Minister Stefanishina, Chief Deineko, ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon to all of you.

I’m very happy to be here virtually to participate in this ceremony.

First and most importantly, let me convey my sincere congratulations to all the participants for successfully completing the selection process.

I understand it was a challenging competition, not only because it included various tests and interviews, but also because it was held in the environment of COVID-19.

Both of our governments have had to adapt because of the conditions, but a rigorous selection process is well worth it.  Implementing merit-based, competitive, and transparent hiring standards ensures integrity and will help further develop and maintain an efficient and professional force.

To the State Border Guard leadership, I commend your commitment to continuing reform at your agency despite today’s challenges.  We are pleased to see how you are moving forward with this initiative and ready to help develop this project further.

I also want to assure you of our continued support, as the United States, as you expand and develop new efforts to combat corruption and modernize your force.

To close, I’d like to congratulate all the participants again and wish all of you the best of luck in your future appointments. Congratulations.  Stay safe and stay healthy.
