On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I congratulate the European Union as you celebrate Europe Day.
Over 60 years ago, a handful of war-scarred countries started down a new path that united a continent. You did it not by force of arms, but by free movement of trade, ideas, and people. You built a union based on values like the rule of law, democracy, and prosperity for all people. Today, thanks to the European Union, we are closer than ever to a Europe that is whole, free, and at peace.
The United States is proud to work hand in hand with you. Together we stand firm with the people of Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression. We share a vision of a Ukraine secure in its internationally recognized borders and at peace with all its neighbors. We commend your leadership in the fight against ISIL. And we applaud your work to save lives in the Mediterranean and tackle the causes that drive desperate migrants and asylum seekers from their countries.
On this joyous occasion, I congratulate the European Union on your success and wish you peace and prosperity in the year ahead.
