Assistant Secretary Donfried’s Visit to Ukraine

Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, Dr. Karen Donfried traveled to Kyiv for meetings on December 13-14 with Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, and Deputy Head of Delegation for Ukraine in the Trilateral Contact Group Andriy Kostin. Following President Biden’s conversations with President Zelenskyy and President Putin, Dr. Donfried reinforced the United States’ commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity in the face of Russian aggression. The Assistant Secretary also discussed the path toward diplomatic progress and de-escalation through implementation of the Minsk agreements in support of the Normandy Format.

During the visit, Dr. Donfried also met with Piet Blondé, Deputy Head of Office of the Special Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office regarding the important role the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission plays in monitoring compliance with the Minsk Agreements.
