Ambassador Yovanovitch’s Remarks at the Rapid Trident Opening Ceremony

Monday, September 3, 2018, 09:00 a.m.

Дóброго рáнку всім!

…and all the distinguished guests, welcome, and thank you for joining Exercise Rapid Trident 2018.

As we open Rapid Trident 2018, we remember a long-held truth: each of our nations is stronger together with partners than when we stand alone.

Today 2,200 participants from 14 nations – spanning continents and oceans – stand in solidarity with Ukraine, for Ukrainian security, Ukrainian sovereignty, and Ukrainian territorial integrity.

These impressive numbers show the overwhelming support that Ukraine enjoys among international partners as it faces Russian aggression in eastern Ukraine.

As we mourn the loss of Senator John McCain, a war hero and former POW, we remember the words he spoke when he visited Ukraine in 2013 during the Maidan protests.

Senator John McCain told the protesters: “We are here to support your just cause, the sovereign right of Ukraine to determine its own destiny freely and independently.”

Today the United States continues to stand firmly with Ukraine to achieve the full restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Since the beginning of the conflict the United States has contributed more than 2 billion dollars in security and other assistance to strengthen Ukraine.

Despite an ongoing conflict, Ukrainian Armed Forces have made remarkable progress.

Partner nation training and equipment have boosted the self-defense capability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and this has saved lives and deterred further Russian aggression.

Thank you to our allies and partners, and thank you to our Ukrainian hosts for your commitment to success.
