Security Alert – U. S. Embassy Kyiv, Ukraine (January 31, 2018)
Location: Kyiv, Ukraine
Event: The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv advises U.S. citizens of a recent increase in reports of criminals targeting unsuspecting visitors to Ukraine, luring them with promises of cheap lodging and/or companionship. The criminals then forcibly abduct the visitors and proceed to make unauthorized transactions via their victims’ bank cards and accounts.
Actions to Take:
- Be cautious of strangers making unsolicited offers.
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Stay alert in locations frequented by tourists/Westerners.
- Keep a low profile.
- Be vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs.
- Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches.
- Use caution when walking or driving at night.
